Worried about losing access to Android, Huawei has been building its own OS? Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:44 AM PDT As you probably know by now, if it loses its last chance appeal with the U.S. government, Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE faces a life without U.S. exports until March 2025. That means it could have an immediate future without the Android OS, Snapdragon chips, and any other parts sourced from U.S. firms. Now, with word that the U.S. Justice Department is investigating Huawei for violating sanctions against Iran, the buzz out of China is that the company has been building a backup OS just for situations like this. Actually, Huawei has a few reasons for worrying. Besides possibly losing access to U.S. exports for trading with Iran, there always is the possibility that the U.S.-China trade war will escalate to include more products. With iOS and Android accounting for 99.9% of the operating systems used on smartphones, there isn't much of a solution for Huawei except to build its own OS. A report published today cites four sources who each claim that Huawei has been working on its own OS. One of the four went on to say that this has been a work in progress since 2012, when the U.S. government first accused Huawei (and ZTE) of espionage. The plan was supposedly put in place by Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, who said in a speech at that time, "We are developing our own OS out of strategic consideration, because won't we be doomed if they suddenly cut off our food, don't allow us to use Android or Windows 8." Huawei already has its own OS for tablets and personal computers, and it created the Kirin line of chipsets that power its smartphones. But the company doesn't sound like it expects its worse-case scenario to play out as far as Android is concerned. Zhao Ming, president of Huawei sub-brand Honor, said this week at an event in Beijing that while Huawei does have the capability of producing its own OS, it won't be necessary. "We work very closely with Google and will continue to use its Android system," Ming noted. This sentiment was echoed in a statement released by Huawei that says the company has no plans to release its own OS, and will continue to use Android. source: SCMP |
Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:34 AM PDT Somebody has recently purchased a brand new copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear, which is very unusual considering that the game was released in 1992. The latest entry in the collection of weird video game stories is certainly a strange one. However, an analyst personally saw to it that the mystery surrounding the Sonic the Hedgehog game was explained. Somebody Purchased A Brand New Game For The Sega Game GearBrand-new Sega Game Gear games should no longer be part of sales reports. However, NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella discovered that somebody recently purchased an unopened copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear. To put things in perspective, the copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that appeared in sales reports was not a used one. It was sold not through a consignment shop but at a legitimate retailer. Like, was it just buried in some back room the last twenty years? Did it get lost underneath some retail fixture? Was it a twenty something year old pre-order? What was the reaction when that person who bought it saw it? So many questions I have.— Mat Piscatella (@MatPiscatella) April 28, 2018
One suggested explanation is that the game was sold as part of the Toys R Us sell-off, which include things on the display shelves and storage units. Perhaps the brand-new Sonic the Hedgehog 2 copy was sitting in a Toys U Us store somewhere for the past two decades? Piscatella, through his series of tweets, looked like he was not letting it go until he found out what really happened, where the game was sold, and who purchased it. Fortunately, the power of the internet provided the answer. Here's Who Bought The Brand-New Copy Of 'Sonic The Hedgehog 2'A relative of the mysterious buyer finally reached out to Piscatella to end the mystery. Replying to one of the analyst's tweets, a user who goes by the name MihaelMELLO_K revealed that it was his brother-in-law who purchased the game. The price tag was $6.99, and it was bought at a store in Wisconsin. My brother in law did Mat pic.twitter.com/kVFlF4In4o — MELLO (@MihaelMELLO_K) April 29, 2018 The brand-new copy of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was purchased in February and after checking Bay prices, presumably to see if it may have been sold for a profit, they decided to instead open the game and play it. They have a Sega Game Gear, unfortunately, they found that it was not working properly. Perhaps the next strange video game report will involve somebody buying a brand-new Sega Game Gear. If that ever happens, one may already have an idea who the customer could possibly be. Pokemon Go Developers Actively Working on "Gen 4" Pokemon and PvP Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:04 AM PDT A random plane ride turned into a font of information about upcoming plans for Pokemon Go. Yesterday, a Twitter user nicknamed "Doctor PoGo" wrote about a chance encounter he had with Niantic CEO John Hanke on an airplane flight. Doctor PoGo posted both photo and video proof that he was sitting next to Hanke and then summarized to the Pokemon Go YouTube personality Reversal a lengthy conversation he had during the plane ride. Hanke told the Twitter user that Pokemon Go developers were working on several big features for the game, including "Gen 4" Pokemon, player vs. player battles, and something to make the map more friendly for those looking for raids in their area. Hanke and other Niantic employees have promised PvP for a long time, but Hanke at least confirmed that there were still plans to bring this much desired feature to the game. As for a new generation of Pokemon, this isn't exactly a surprise, given that Pokemon Go still has over 400 Pokemon left to add to the game. However, this could mean that we'll get the next wave of Pokemon sooner as opposed to later. Some players have theorized that we could see the Gen 4 Pokemon come out in late summer/early fall 2018, which seems possible if Pokemon Go developers are working on adding them to the game now. The map overhaul is an unexpected but welcome piece of news, given that Pokemon Go uses raids as its primary means to distribute Legendary Pokemon. While its easy to find random raid parties in dense urban cities, it's a little harder to find them in the suburban sprawl or rural areas. Other new features/developments mentioned during the conversation includes an increase to the player Level cap (currently set at Level 40), a way for players to submit PokeStops locations to add to the game (an unsurprising development given that code for such a feature was recently added to Pokemon Go in a recent update) and that Niantic was planning another Pokemon Go Fest for next year. Statements by other Niantic employees have hinted that this year's Pokemon Go Fest will take place in Dortmund, Germany. Hanke also noted that Pokemon Go remained dedicated to stamping out spoofing, a common means of cheating within the game. 0commentsHere are Reversal's full Twitter comments about the conversation:
