Microsoft is finally bringing full Linux to Windows 10 - TechRadar

Posted: 07 May 2019 04:37 AM PDT

Linux could soon be coming to your desktop after Microsoft revealed plans to ship a full Linux kernel directly in Windows 10.

In great news for open-source fans, the computing giant has said it will look to push the launch of a Linux kernel in Windows 10 for the first time at its Microsoft Build conference.

The launch will dovetail with a distribution installed through the Windows Store, with a release expected later this year - although Windows Insider users will be able to get preview builds by the end of June.

Goodness

Microsoft says that the first release will be based on the latest stable Linux release (version 4.19), and updates will come alongside each stable release going forward.

This should mean a major boost in performance when compared to the current emulator, with faster boot times and more efficient memory use also mentioned as new perks.

"Beginning with Windows Insiders builds this Summer, we will include an in-house custom-built Linux kernel to underpin the newest version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)," Microsoft program manager Jack Hammons wrote in a blog post announcing the news.

"The kernel will be rebased at the designation of new long-term stable releases to ensure that the WSL kernel always has the latest Linux goodness."

"This is the culmination of years of effort from the Linux Systems Group as well as multiple other teams across Microsoft. We are excited to be able to share the result and look forward to the new and interesting ways in which you will use WSL."

Microsoft also announced a new edition of its Windows Terminal command line app, giving a welcome makeover to one of its longest-running and most familiar-looking tools.

The updated service sees new tabs and tear-away windows, with themes and extensions also available for the first time, as Microsoft looks to provide a central location to access the likes of Cmd and PowerShell as well as the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

Here Are All The Announcements From Google I/O 2019 - BuzzFeed News

Posted: 07 May 2019 07:03 AM PDT

Later this morning, Google CEO Sundar Pichai will give us a glimpse of what's new and what's next for the tech giant at today's annual I/O developer's conference. It's where the company reveals product updates for Android, Assistant, Gmail and a slew of other services; We'll be on the ground in Mountain View, CA covering the latest, live from the keynote.

The focus of Google I/O has typically been the company's developments in artificial intelligence and software, but multiple leaks showing off the the Pixel 3a, Google's new low-cost phone, point to what will likely be a hardware announcement at the conference.

At the very least, expect to hear Google leadership extol the new features coming to Android Q, the latest version of its operating system. Google has also started adding more privacy-focused controls for its users' data, like the ability to automatically scrub your location data and web history and turning off Google Assistant voice recordings by default. We'll likely see more of that. It's possible that we'll also get a launch date for the new streaming gaming service Stadia.

At last year's event, Pichai unveiled the Duplex assistant, a voice bot that's creepily good at making hair appointments and restaurant reservations, and its new suite of digital wellbeing tools, aimed at helping people limit their screen time. Since then, the company has faced brewing internal turmoil. In August, employees organized to protest a project named Dragonfly, a controversial censored search app for the Chinese market. Then, in November, employees staged a massive walkout, protesting the company's handling of sexual misconduct in the workplace.

Stay tuned for the latest developments as we cover them here, and watch along starting at 10am PT on the Google Developers YouTube channel.

Samsung does not yet have a confirmed shipping date for the $2,000 Galaxy Fold, its new folding phone that has been delayed after review units, including one tested by CNBC, broke before the phone was set to launch.

According to Reuters, Samsung said in an email to preorder customers that it will automatically cancel all orders if it can't make a fix by May 31 and the customer does not confirm a continued interest in it.

"If we do not hear from you and we have not shipped by May 31, your order will be canceled automatically," the email said, according to Reuters. A Samsung spokesperson told CNBC the cancellations are due to U.S. regulation requirements.

Samsung's Galaxy Fold was provided to early reviewers ahead of an expected April 26 launch date. CNBC's unit broke after two days. Other reviewers from Bloomberg, The Verge and The Wall Street Journal peeled off a special film that looked like a screen protector, causing damage.

The company asked for all review units back and delayed the release on April 22. Samsung said the phone needs "further improvements" before it's released to customers, including better guidance to let consumers not to remove the protective film on top of the screen.

Anyone who preordered the device will not be charged until it ships. Samsung says it is working to "strengthen the display protection" and has not yet provided an expected release date.

"Samsung Electronics America is committed to keeping our customers informed on the status of their Galaxy Fold preorder," a company spokesperson told CNBC. "While we continue to make progress in enhancing the Galaxy Fold, a new release date has not yet been announced. Because of this, we have recently contacted our preorder customers to provide them information on their options as we move forward."
