Apple will be temporarily shuttering all stores outside China until March 27, in response to mounting concern over the novel coronavirus, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced on Saturday. Cook also said in a tweet that the company will be committing $15 million to recovery efforts and matching employee donations two-to-one as the coronavirus, which causes the disease known as COVID-19, continues to grip the US. „What we've learned together has helped us all develop the best practices that are assisting enormously in our global response," Cook wrote in a press release. „One of those lessons is that the most effective way to minimize risk of the virus's transmission is to reduce density and maximize social distance." „As rates of new infections continue to grow in other places, we're taking additional steps to protect our team members and customers." The retailer will continue to fulfill purchases made online or through the Apple phone apps. As of Saturday morning, the coronavirus has infected more than 145,000 people worldwide, and the death toll has surpassed 5,400. There are at least 2,330 confirmed coronavirus cases in the US, and 50 people have died of the disease. |
Posted: 13 Mar 2020 01:49 PM PDT REVEALED: Cell phone sold by Pablo Escobar's brother is just a rebranded Samsung Galaxy Fold covered in gold tinfoil
A foldable phone made headlines last year that pulled inspiration from the late Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and the company behind the device is back with a next-generation model – the Escobar Fold 2. Designed by Roberto Escobar, Pablo's brother, the smartphone claims to be a 'real Samsung killer' at a fraction of the cost, as it sells for $350 while Samsung's is around $1,500. However, a tear down of the casing reveals that it is not going to replace the South Korean smartphone because Escobar's handset is a Galaxy Fold, just wrapped in a gold sticker. YouTuber Marques Brownlee compared the Escobar Fold 2 with the Galaxy Fold and found not only do both smartphones have the same design, but he was able to scratch the decal off the hinge to reveal Samsung's logo. Although Roberto Escobar was the former accountant and co-founder of the Medellin Cartel, it had seemed he had turned over a new leaf with a more legit business – but it seems that he hasn't strayed too far from his roots. Last December, he unveiled the $349 Pablo Escobar Fold 1 that boasts two 7.8-inch screens, folds into a tablet and is said to be 'unbreakable'. Escobar 'cut the networks and retailers' in order to sell the smartphone at a low price with a goal to entice iOS users and 'beat Apple' -which he said is scamming customers. YouTuber Marques Brownlee compared the Escobar Fold 2 with the Galaxy Fold and found not only do both smartphones have the same design, but he was able to scratch the decal off the hinge to reveal Samsung's logo The gold foil came right off the back of the smartphone with the box cutter as well And earlier this month, Escobar Inc., announced it had developed a second generation Escobar Fold. 'My goal is to become the overstock kingpin of electronical devices this year Roberto De Jesus Escobar Gaviria, Pablo Escobar's brother and Founder of Escobar Inc. 'All these factories simply have too much technology laying around, nobody is buying anything in China from secondary factories.' 'We cut the prices and give clients direct discounts under the Escobar brand umbrella.' Brownlee, who was able to get his hands on the new Escobar Fold 2, thought there was something odd about the device. 'From using the phone just for a little bit, it's pretty clear this appears to be a legit Samsung Galaxy Fold,' he said in the video. 'It's not just the lower quality packaging, it's not just the lower quality marketing,' Brownlee says. 'My theory is that they are going through orders, finding the names of YouTubers or people in tech media or people they think will talk about the phone if they get it and shipping those and just not shipping the rest 'This Escobar Fold is the same phone with a gold sticker glued to it.' No, it's actually a galaxy fold with gold tinfoil adhesive to it.' Brownlee pulled out a box cutter and began to scrape along the hinge of the Escobar Fold and underneath the sticker was the Samsung logo. The gold foil came right off the back of the smartphone with the box cutter as well. He continued to explain his theory of how Escobar is able to sell the Samsung smartphone for a fraction of the cost. Posted: 13 Mar 2020 03:01 PM PDT New MacBook Air Possible as Early as Next WeekLast March, MacRumors received an anonymous tip claiming that Apple would announce new iPad, iMac, and iPod models with three consecutive days of press releases the following week, and that information proved to be two-thirds accurate with new iPad Air and iPad mini models announced on Monday, March 18 and an iMac refresh on Tuesday, March 19. Apple did announce a new product on the Wednesday, but it was new AirPods, not a new iPod. Given both products have "Pod" in their name, perhaps there was some confusion there, but it is clear the tipster was relatively informed. Now, the same anonymous tipster has informed MacRumors that Apple plans to announce new MacBook Air models next week. We have yet to confirm this information, but given the tipster now has an established track record, we have elected to share this rumor. The tipster did not provide any further details at this time. A few days ago, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple plans to launch updated MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with scissor keyboards in the second quarter of 2020, following in the footsteps of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. While the second quarter does not begin until April, an announcement next week would be just a few weeks earlier. Apple has announced new or refreshed products in March for the last five consecutive years, so there is precedence. In terms of covering all bases, however, we cannot rule out the possibility that the tipster received wrong information. The current MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro are still equipped with butterfly keyboards that can suffer from issues |
