The Analogue Pocket Retro Game Boy Handheld Ships In May 2021 - Kotaku Posted: 27 Jul 2020 08:00 AM PDT Last year, Analogue, makers of excellent high-end retro consoles like the Analogue NT (NES) and Mega SG (Sega Genesis), announced a high-def portable Game Boy console complete with its own HDMI dock, due out in 2020. Thanks to covid-19's effect on the supply chain, the Analogue Pocket is now shipping in May of 2021, with preorders going live next week. While it took longer than expected, the Analogue Pocket is finally on its way. Buyers interested in the hardware-emulated Nintendo handheld, with its gorgeous 3.5 inch 1600x1440 pixel display, built-in Nanoloop music creation software, and ability to run Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games natively will be able to preorder the device on the official website starting August 3 at noon Eastern time. The Analogue Pocket itself is $200. The dock, which supports HDMI out and up to four external controllers, is $100. Advertisement The folks at Analogue have used the time between the Analogue Pocket's announcement and the upcoming preorder period to tweak the design slightly and put together some accessories. The unit's start and select buttons have been shifted from the lower right-hand side to the bottom center. There's a lovely transparent hard case available, which protects the Analogue Pocket while allowing folks to see how pretty it is. There are also a series of cartridge adapters that allow Atari Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and Sega Game Gear games to be played. G/O Media may get a commission It basically sounds like the end-all, be-all of hardware-based retro handheld emulation. I wish we didn't have to wait, but at least now we know how long we'll be waiting. |
0 to 50 in 5 Minutes: Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 Could Be Wicked Fast - Gizmodo Posted: 27 Jul 2020 06:00 AM PDT Qualcomm's Quick Charge platform has sort of become an industry-standard having been used on a wide range of phones, tablets, and more. But now for Quick Charge 5, Qualcomm is giving its charging platform a massive boost in speed. Boasting support for charging speeds of more than 100 watts, Quick Charge 5 is around four times faster than Quick Charge 4.0+ (which topped out at 27 watts). Qualcomm claims Quick Charge 5 can charge a device with a 4,500 mAh battery from 0 to 50% in just five minutes. But what might be even more important than its charging speeds is that Quick Charge 5 is a superset of all of Qualcomm's previous versions of Quick Charge while also offering full-support for the USB-Power Delivery spec. That means Quick Charge 5 is backward compatible with every device using an older Quick Charge standard while also being compatible with newer USB-PD devices which include a growing number of tablets and even laptops. Advertisement This stands in contrast to something like Oppo's new Flash Charge tech, because while Flash Charge is technically a bit faster with support for up to 125 watts of power, Flash Charge is proprietary tech that doesn't see much use on non-Oppo devices. G/O Media may get a commission Quick Charge 5 is also 70% more power-efficient than Quick Charge 4, which should lead to less wasted energy and cooler charging temps, with Qualcomm claiming Quick Charge 5 runs up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than QC4. To help extend the life of your device's battery, QC 5 includes Qualcomm's new Battery Saver tech, which looks to maximize power efficiency and reduce the thermal impacts of charging. Advertisement Qualcomm has even created something called Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities, which requires QC5 devices to communicate with the power brick it's attached to in order to verify things like voltage ranges, current behavior, and more, along with checks for 12 different voltage, current, and temperature measurements. That should help keep things from getting too toasty in your phone's battery. While there isn't a set date for when Quick Charge 5 will start appearing on actual retail devices, Xiaomi has already committed to including QC5 in a range of upcoming products with QC 5 expected to become more widely available on devices starting sometime in Q3 2020. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 tipped to have gesture controls - TechRadar Posted: 26 Jul 2020 02:30 AM PDT We know Samsung is poised to unveil a whole host of hardware devices over the next few days, and after some comprehensive Galaxy Buds Live leaks, it's now the turn of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 to have some of its features revealed ahead of time. As leaks go, ones that come straight from the manufacturer are the most reliable, and as XDA Developers has spotted, Samsung has decided to put the Galaxy Watch 3 plug-in companion app live on the Android app store. The most interesting revelation from a dig through the app code is support for gestures: you'll be able to clench and unclench your fist to answer a call, or shake your wrist to reject it, for example. Fall detection is going to be included with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, it would seem. If the wearable thinks that you've fallen over, you'll be asked to confirm you're okay – if you don't respond, your emergency contacts or the emergency services get a call. Watch out for updatesXDA Developers has also been able to establish that the way of taking screenshots on your Samsung watch is changing with the Galaxy Watch 3: you need to press both side buttons at the same time to capture whatever's on the screen. A host of wallpaper options have also been revealed, including ones that match the wallpapers arriving with the Galaxy Note 20 line of phones. Both the phones and the wearable are expected to break cover at an official online Samsung event on August 5. 9to5Google was able to tease out a few more details from the app, including a wrist rotation gesture that lets you mute alarms, and a way of opening your hand to take a photo on your connected smartphone. You haven't missed the Galaxy Watch 2 by the way – this is the direct successor to the original Galaxy Watch from 2018. We've already had the name, the sizes and the materials of the wearable leaked via a Samsung support page online. |
