Posted: 11 Dec 2020 04:52 PM PST The Last of Us Part II won seven categories at The Game Awards 2020, including the Game of the Year and Best Narrative titles. Although the title has been beset with criticism from some gamers angry at playing as Abby, the actress who voiced the character, Laura Bailey, won a Best Performance Game Award for her role. The Last of Us Part II cleaned up at The Game Awards 2020, winning in the following seven categories: Best Action/Adventure, Innovation in Accessibility, Best Performance, Best Audio Design, Best Narrative, Best Game Direction, and the all-important Game of the Year category. It's an impressive achievement for Naughty Dog and Sony, and also for key players such as the writers Neil Druckmann (who also directed) and Halley Gross, and the actors involved like Ashley Johnson (Ellie), Joel (Troy Baker), and Game Award-winner Laura Bailey (Abby). It's another incredible showing for The Last of Us Part II, which also won an armful of trophies at the recent Golden Joystick Awards. However, while the PS4 version of the game sits on a healthy score of 93 on Metacritic thanks to an abundance of glowing reviews from professional critics, it seems gamers have been less appeased by the direction of the game's narrative. At the time of writing, there were a credible 76,306 positive user scores, but there were also 64,332 negative ones, leaving a user score of a middling 5.7. Complaints about the game have mostly focused on the storyline, with some players criticizing the required time playing as Abby. In fact, some have disliked this component so much that they have resorted to sending despicable threats to actress Laura Bailey along the lines of "I'm going to find where you live and slaughter you" and "I hope your parents die by a hard cancer". While "fans" who act like this are clearly doing the whole fanbase a massive disservice, as creators are going to think twice about continuing developing an IP if they are going to receive death threats just for making bold narrative changes, others have spoken with their wallets: Four million copies of The Last of Us Part II were sold within its first three days of release. |
iFixit pulls the PS5 completely apart - Engadget Posted: 12 Dec 2020 02:50 AM PST Before the PlayStation 5 even shipped, Sony posted a detailed teardown video of its own, revealing previously unseen details like the fan that pulls in air from both sides and internal SSD expansion slot. Now the iFixit folks have attacked it with their usual gusto, pulling the various boards fully part to take a look from a third-party perspective, and even put it through the x-ray machine for good measure. There aren't really any secrets hiding in that plastic case, and nothing that will help you find one on sale at retail price, but they did note that (just like the Xbox Series X), optical drive-equipped machines are secured against allowing users to swap out the drive themselves. They also took a closer look at the foam covered pouch that keeps the CPU's liquid metal thermal solution from splashing around. They didn't note any possible sources for coil whine that some owners complained about at launch, but did remark on a sticker covering one of the screws. At least a few people who've heard fan noise in their system took it apart to find a sticker loose inside, so if you're following their guide hoping to quiet your system down, that's something to keep an eye out for. Finally, for good measure they also took apart the DualSense controller, which we've seen the insides of before, but if you'd like some detailed pictures then of course there are a few available here. |
