Huawei just trolled Samsung hours before its Galaxy Note 9 announcement Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:15 AM PDT It’s finally the day many Galaxy Note fans have been waiting for, the day when Samsung will hold its second annual Unpacked event of 2018 to unveil the Galaxy Note 9. The phone isn’t as exciting as some people might want it to be, but it’ll be one of the hottest smartphones you can buy this summer. But Samsung isn’t the only Android device maker planning to launch new products in the second half of the year. Huawei, which aims to become the top handset maker in the world in the next two years, brilliantly trolled Samsung just before the press conference by mocking one of the key features of its upcoming Note 9 phone. Because Samsung couldn’t or didn’t want to keep the Galaxy Note 9 secret, we all knew everything there is to know about the phone months before the phone’s actual launch. That also means Samsung’s competitors knew what to expect from the company’s new flagship phablet. Huawei is one of them, and the company found a great way to tease that it’s making a Galaxy Note 9 alternative as we speak, one that will deliver better battery life than the Galaxy Note 9. Thanks to all the other leaks, we know that a Mate 20 series is coming this fall, with the Mate line being Huawei’s Galaxy Note or the second flagship phone of the year. We also know that the Galaxy Note 9 will have excellent battery life thanks to a 4,000 mAh battery. We’ve had many leaks confirm the new battery capacity, and Samsung’s teasers listed battery life as a key feature of the new Note 9. With all that in mind, here comes the brilliant Huawei trolling that I mentioned. From Pocket-lint:
Here’s a photo of Huawei’s teaser, featuring the evolution of Huawei’s flagships when it comes to battery size and battery life from the 2017 P10 Plus all the way to the upcoming mystery flagship shown on the right side:
It’s clear that Huawei increased the battery capacity from the P10 Plus launched last year to the P20 Pro that followed it. The bar graph on the right also shows that Huawei increased battery life on those phones. For example, both the Mate 10 Pro and the P20 Pro feature 4,000 mAh batteries, but the P20 Pro delivers slightly better battery life according to the graph. That’s because the latest phones are supposed to be even more efficient than their predecessors. Huawei is telling us in this image that a new phone is coming that will be bigger than the P20 Pro, will have a larger battery, and will consume energy even more efficiently than previous flagships. Given Huawei’s diagram above, I’d say the Mate 20 Pro is that mystery phone. It will have a battery even larger than the 4,000 mAh batteries used so far. Furthermore, the teaser hints the phone will have a next-gen chip and other components that will require less energy. And it just so happens that the Mate 20 Pro is rumored to feature an all-new 7nm chip, a first for Huawei and the entire Android ecosystem. In other words, Huawei just told everyone not to buy the Galaxy Note 9 because something better is coming soon. |
Limited Edition PS4 Pro Celebrates 500M PlayStations Sold Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:51 AM PDT If you're as old as I am, then you'll remember the day Sony launched its first PlayStation way back in 1995 (1994 in Japan). It was a turning point for the gaming industry because Sony produced a console and games that appealed to adults as much as it did to younger generations. Now, 24 years and four generations of hardware later, Sony is celebrating selling 500 million consoles. More specifically, Sony has sold 523.3 million PlayStation systems worldwide (and counting), and what better way to celebrate than to try selling even more with a very special limited edition PS4 Pro! It's called the 500 Million Limited Edition PS4 Pro and Sony is only making 50,000 of them available worldwide. What makes it special is the translucent dark blue casing with matching DualShock 4 wireless controller. On the front of the console you'll find a commemorative copper plate with the limited edition serial number etched into it. Inside, Sony installed a 2TB hard drive. Also included in the special translucent packaging will be a PlayStation Camera and vertical stand for the console. It's going to be difficult to secure one of these PS4 Pro simply because stock is so limited. If you want one, Sony is pricing it at $499. Separate to that, you can buy the Limited Edition DualShock 4 controller for $69.99 and a Limited Edition Gold Wireless Headset for $99.99, which matches the design of the console. So buying the console, an extra pad, and the headset means spending $668.98. Sony intends to make stock available to retailers on August 24. However, if you are only interested in the DualShock 4 or Gold Wireless Headset, then expect to wait until early September for those to appear. I suspect the limited edition consoles will sell out long before all the controllers and headsets disappear. |
Discord adds games to its Nitro subscription service and opens a store Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:01 AM PDT Discord joins the fight … for your money. The popular communication platform for gamers is revealing today that it is opening a game store and adding an instant library of games to its Nitro subscription program. This is part of Discord’s continued pattern of growth from a social tool to a fully independent platform where you can buy (or subscribe to) games, maintain a library, and connect with friends for online multiplayer sessions. “For many people like us, you grew up during a time when there were a relatively small amount of games being released,” reads a Discord blog post. “Today, the problem has flipped on its head. There’s an abundance of fantastic games. Fantastic games that we missed. Games that we even purchased but never got around to playing. We want to give you an easy opportunity to play the golden games you’ve missed and we want to offer an awesome selection. So, we’ve curated some of these golden games and will be adding them to Discord Nitro.” The store is opening up in soft launch today for 50,000 players in Canada, and Discord plans to expand to more players and regions over time. Those early testers will also see the beefed up Discord Nitro, which includes a curated list of games that automatically appears for download in the new Discord library tab. The service plans to curate the games that appear both in the subscription and the store, so don’t expect Steam like numbers of new games for now. And developers who sell their games in the store will get the same 70-30 split (30 percent going to Discord) that is standard on all other distribution platforms. And, of course, you can add all of your games from any service to Discord’s library so you don’t have to open multiple frontends and stores. Here’s what’s in the Nitro subscription at launch:
And here’s what you can buy in the store:
Discord is also introducing the “First On Discord” program where it will help launch indie games that are only available on its store or through Nitro for a limited time. “Supporting indie games pushes the boundary of creative game design and is important to innovation and the long term health of the industry,” reads the blog post. “To be very clear, First on Discord games are temporarily exclusive. They’re literally first on Discord — usually 90 days and then the developers can sell anywhere else they want. This beta won’t have any First on Discord titles, but we’ll be showing off some soon.” So Discord is getting into the battle for your gaming dollars. Steam has dominated PC for so long, but it seems like something has broken loose recently. Major publishers are leaving Steam for their own platforms, and maybe Discord has enabled them to feel confident to do that because so many players no longer rely on Valve’s service for their social interactions. But now Discord is opening up shop as well, and it could potentially turn all of those users into customers in a way that disrupts gaming forever. |
