Best Buy inadvertently sold Google's next-gen Chromecast Posted: 29 Sep 2018 07:34 PM PDT Google is still having an absolutely lousy time keeping its October 9th announcements under wraps. Redditor GroveStreetHomie managed to buy the as yet unreleased third-generation Chromecast at a Best Buy that had mistakenly put it out for sale. Externally, it's more a subtle refresh of the 2015 model than a revolution -- it's still a puck-shaped dongle, just with a matte surface and the Chrome logo replaced with the virtually omnipresent "G" from newer devices. Inside, however, it might be more interesting. While this could be just a visual refresh, The FCC recently greenlit a new Chromecast that would include Bluetooth and, potentially, more powerful WiFi. Although it's not certain how Google would use Bluetooth, rumors have swirled of Google developing a game streaming service that could use the wireless format for gamepads. GroveStreetHomie couldn't set up the device yet (it claimed he needed an update) to check for new features. According to Best Buy, the new adapter is due to go on sale October 9th for the same $35 as the regular Chromecast. If so, you won't have to wait long to find out exactly what's new... even if some of the mystery is already gone. |
Pokemon Go news: Gen 4 release date reports, Shiny Krabby, first Deoxys launch Posted: 30 Sep 2018 05:01 AM PDT Pokemon Go news this week includes the latest Gen 4 release rumours Niantic has been on a roll when it comes to new content, with plenty of recent events and Pokemon rewards to enjoy. It was recently revealed that this has helped push Pokemon Go revenue to new heights, with 1.8 billion the number being thrown around. That’s after two years of the game being available to download and it doesn’t look like the development team will be wrapping things up anytime soon. With the summer now over, fans are looking to what could be the next major Pokemon Go event. And many suspect that it could be Halloween 2018. This all comes connected to the new Mewtwo Raids, which are set to run until October 23, 2018. Trainers can currently take on the powerful psychic type in normal raids, having been replaced in the EX Raids by Deoxys. And fans believe that the timing could mean something big is being planned for Halloween 2018. New Shiny Krabbys are coming to the game Last year’s spooky event included the first Gen 3 Pokemon being released, so it stands to reason that Gen 4 could make their debut in 2018. The likes of Sableye, Banette, and a few other Ghost-type Pokémon originally discovered in the Hoenn region were the first to make their debut in-game. This was followed by the rest of the Pokemon first seen in the Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire video games being gradually added in December. This all remains speculation for the time being, although there have been hints that Pokemon Gen 4 is being worked on by Niantic. Data miners recently found references to Sinnoh types in the game’s code, a pretty good sign something is coming. However, since these Sinnoh references were found in the network traffic by data analyst Chrales, it appears it has now been removed. Will Halloween bring the new Gen 4 update? October isn’t far away so you can bet data miners will be keeping an eye on Pokemon Go network traffic to see if anymore surprise pop up. There’s a good chance that Niantic will want to finish 2018 with a bang, especially when it comes to keeping their playerbase happy. Speaking of new content, it appears a fresh shiny is coming to the game very soon. It has now been announced that Shiny Krabbys and Kinglers are being added to the game, starting early October. This has come from Niantic backed YouTube, Reversal, who made the announcement earlier this week. According to the big news drop, the new shiny Pokemon will be available to catch on October 1, from 9pm in the UK. The special Pokemon will be unlocked via a new Field Research quest, although it’s also expected that they will be found in the wild. A new Spinda form is also expected to launch next month, with Reversal explaining on an official Reddit post: “I’ve got some exciting news to share! “Niantic’s shared with me that Shiny Krabby/Kingler and the Third Spinda Quest is targeted for release during the Suicune Research Breakthrough Month! “The only sort of evidence of my credibility I’ve got is that I’m one of the partnered YouTubers with Niantic for Pokémon GO so I figured I’d relay the message here instead of just linking my video here. “If there’s anything else I’m able to share I’ll keep you guys posted.” Are you one of the lucky few who will get to challenge Deoxys first in Pokemon Go? New EX Raid invites have been sent out by Niantic, meaning that new challengers will be grouping up to take on the powerful pocket monster. From the information posted by the PoGo support team, the first EX Raids featuring Deoxys have been scheduled for the first week of October. Monday, October 1 and Tuesday, October 2, will be the dates when these first battles take place. However, Trainers did report some initial confusion following the release of the new invites. This is down to the fact that the special raid passes said the encounter would be happening later that day. This is highly unusual, and when players did turn up, no Deoxys raid began. Instead, a message from Niantic Support confirmed what had happened and when the new EX Raids would be taking place. “Hi Trainers, if you received an EX Raid Pass at a Gym that currently has an active Raid, the time of your EX Raid will update once that Raid ends,” the Niantic message reads. “The next EX Raid will take place on either October 1 or 2. Thanks for your patience!” So no one should have missed out on their big chance to face Deoxys, who looks set to prove a big challenge. The Psychic-type Mythical Pokémon will be available to challenge in its Normal Form, but that still looks like it will take a good group to beat. |
Apple's iOS 12 update is causing sporadic issues with iPhone charging Posted: 29 Sep 2018 02:36 PM PDT Multiple reports are suggesting that iOS 12 may have a bug, causing periodic and random issues with devices not charging when plugged in to a power source, or placed on a wireless charging pad without user interaction. At Apple's discussion board, there are currently 108 users commenting on a potential problem with either the iPhone XS or iOS 12. The fault occurs when the user connects a Lightning cable to the charge port using a common wall charger, or place the device on a Qi charging pad. Most of the time, the iPhone functions as expected, and immediately begins charging the phone. However, on occasion, users plugging the phone will neither get a charge symbol, nor the noise that the device plays when it begins charging. Some users were able to get the phone to begin to charge by plugging it in, waiting between 10 and 15 seconds, and waking the phone —but not necessarily unlocking it. "If i haven't interacted with the phone for some time, it becomes unresponsive to a charger being plugged in," said one user. "But if I unplug then lift it and start using it, it will recognize the charger." UnboxTherapy tested a variety of iPhone XS units in studio and found they could repeat the problem. They tested nine separate iPhone XS and XS Max phones and were able to demonstrate the issue a handful of times. However, AppleInsider has not yet gotten the issue to manifest with an iPhone XS Max, iPhone X, or iPhone 8 Plus running iOS 12 connected to USB-A to Lightning or USB-C to Lightning plugged into either a computer, a wall adapter, or any one of a variety of Qi charging pads. However, an iPhone 7 and 12.9-inch first-generation iPad Pro have both manifested the problem once each during some testing on Saturday evening. The issue may be related to USB restricted mode, a feature that Apple developed to help secure data on the phone against devices that try and download a phone's data for law enforcement or nefarious purposes. USB restricted mode shouldn't be interfering with a simple wall charger, but the interaction that users are noticing, lifting the phone in order to get it to charge after it's been left idle, seems related to the need to unlock a device to get it to connect to a peripheral through Lightning. The issue may also be manifesting elsewhere. Belkin's has confirmed that its original PowerHouse and Valet charging docks are incompatible with the iPhone XS family. Users attempting to use those devices are finding that the iPhone simply will not charge when placed on the device. Belkin has noted on the product page that the devices aren't compatible with the iPhone XS family, or the forthcoming iPhone XR —but has not elaborated as to why. AppleInsider has reached out to Apple for comment on the matter.</span> |
