Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:21 AM PDT Apple's new TV+ service just launched today… Disney+ launches in less than 2 weeks… and yet despite all the new competition, we haven't seen many Netflix subscribers say they plan to ditch the service. In fact, we're not sure we've seen ANY Netflix subscribers say that. Apple's new streamer is a nonfactor at this point since pretty much everything it has to offer out of the gate has been critically panned. Forget what the critics say, though, because you can see for yourself that all the launch shows look boring and bland. As for Disney+, it's shaping up to be a must-have, but will it replace Netflix? No way — and Disney actually did Netflix a favor by making it so cheap at $6.99 per month or less. At that price, keeping Netflix and adding Disney+ is a no-brainer. So, now that we've established we're all keeping Netflix, what does the nation's most popular streaming content provider have to offer us in November 2019? As it turns out, a whole lot. Netflix is obviously well aware that it has some new competition coming this month because November is jam-packed full of new original series, movies, and specials. In fact, there are a whopping 73 new original releases slated for November! Netflix has released 12 new originals today alone, including season 3 of Atypical, a new Queer Eye special, and the hotly anticipated, racially charged drama American Son. As the month progresses, we get a new Seth Myers standup special as well as new specials from Jeff Garlin and Mike Birbiglia, The End of the F***ing World season 2, a new season of The Great British Baking Show, new installments of Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, and a new season of the critically acclaimed drama The Crown. All that is great, but there's no question that the biggest premiere coming to Netflix in November happens on November 27th, when Martin Scorsese's new Netflix original movie The Irishman hits the site. It stars Robert Dinero, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, and it's obviously going to be one of the most widely streamed Netflix originals of all time. Before we dive into Netflix's release schedule for November 2019, you should make sure you didn't miss anything big from October. After all, Netflix had 67 new original movies and shows debut over the course of last month. You'll find the full list right here, and then you should also be sure to check out all the third-party content coming and going on Netflix in November. Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:11 AM PDT It takes a lot to scare anyone on Halloween night, but Google Chrome engineers were spooked enough to issue an urgent update announcement for the browser across all platforms. So, what gave Google the heebie-jeebies? The answer is not one but two security vulnerabilities, one of which has a zero-day exploit out in the wild already. Here's what is known so farThe October 31 disclosure from Google confirmed that the "stable channel" desktop Chrome browser is being updated to version 78.0.3904.87 across the Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. This urgent update will start rolling out "over the coming days/weeks," according to Google. Unlike recent Windows 10 security alerts advising not to install an update, Chrome users should ensure they do install this one. At this moment in time, it is proving hard to find out much specific detail about either of the vulnerabilities concerned, other than the fact that one of the two being fixed by the update is already being exploited in the wild. Google said that this is because: "Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on but haven't yet fixed." What is the Google Chrome zero-day exploit? What is known is that the one that Google has said the exploit exists in the wild is for the CVE-2019-13720 vulnerability. This was reported by two Kaspersky researchers, Anton Ivanov and Alexey Kulaev, on October 29. According to a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) statement, the Google update "addresses vulnerabilities that an attacker could exploit to take control of an affected system," but that's as far as the detail goes. Both this and CVE-2019-13721, are "use-after-free" vulnerabilities, which exploit memory corruption to escalate privileges on the attacked system. For CVE-2019-13721 this impacts the PDFium library that is involved with generating and viewing PDF files. It is the other, CVE-2019-13720, that has been reported as being exploited in the wild and this impacts the Chrome web browser audio component. How serious are these Chrome zero-day vulnerabilities?Although any vulnerability that is given a high severity rating has to be taken seriously, there remain different levels of risk for average users and those likely to be of interest to nation-state hackers for example. Unlike recent Android security alerts including the now infamous Joker malware, it would appear that the real-world risk isn't too critical for most people. "For me, it's relatively low risk, with Google quickly acknowledging the vulnerabilities," Mike Thompson, an application security specialist, "it's another day at the 'zero-day' office where, in my humble opinion, the likelihood of any real damage is minimal." John Opdenakker, an ethical hacker, agrees that it's good to see Google acting so quickly, "particularly as far as the one that's already been exploited in the wild is concerned," he says. Having done some further digging, as ethical hackers have a habit of doing, Opdenakker says, "this most severe vulnerability can only be exploited via specially crafted websites," which means, "the average user shouldn't lose any sleep." Mitigation adviceThat said, both Opdenakker and Thompson also advise users to ensure the Chrome browser update is installed as soon as possible to mitigate any risk. This should happen automatically over the coming days and weeks; however, I would advise Chrome users to manually trigger the update process using the "Help | About Google Chrome" menu option. |
DEAL: Samsung Offering Up to $600 Off Galaxy Note 10 Again With Trades - Droid Life Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:33 PM PDT With the topic of the day being "What phone should you buy instead of the Pixel 4?" and one of our suggestions being the Galaxy Note 10 series, here's the latest on Note 10 deals. Samsung is offering up to $600 off with select trades, though the chances of you getting $450-off are much more likely. Here's the deal. If you trade-in a Galaxy S10+ or iPhone XS Max, you'll get an immediate $600 off a Galaxy Note 10 or Note 10+ today with the understanding that you'll trade your phone in once your new Note arrives. Don't have a Galaxy S10+ to trade-in? Samsung is offering $450 off for the S10, S10e, Note 9, Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL, and a variety of iPhones. They'll also give you $350 off for the Galaxy S9 and a bunch of other phones. To show you why those are good values, know that Google is only giving up to $295 for the Pixel 3 XL when you trade it in for the Pixel 4. They also don't give you that discount immediately and instead make you wait for the credit down the road. Samsung's trade-in program is the best and these values are some of the highest since Note 10 launch. |
