Posted: 19 Mar 2022 02:31 AM PDT Since the embargo lifted on Apple's Mac Studio, more benchmarks and teardowns of the device are coming in, featuring the brand new M1 Ultra SOC. Just like its tall GPU performance claims, the chip maker claimed some big numbers for its newest chip against desktop options from Intel & AMD but independent tests show that Apple is once again unable to match those claims. Apple M1 Ultra SOC Pictured, Massive Chip With Nearly 3 Times The Package Size of an AMD Ryzen CPUThe first teardown video of the Apple M1 Ultra SOC has been published by tech channel, Max Tech, who managed to take apart the Mac Studio and give us the first look at the massive package for the new chip. The chip was also compared to an AMD Ryzen CPU which looks tiny compared to the M1 Ultra. Based on the size and dimensions, the M1 Ultra is nearly 3 times the size of the AMD Ryzen chip. But there are reasons why this chip is so huge, you see not only is the M1 Ultra an MCM chip that fuses two M1 Max dies together but it also has a huge 64-core GPU, all the IO & even the memory on the same package. The Ultra SOC still utilizes the 5nm process node but the doubling provides up to 114 Billion transistors on the same package. The new UltraFusion architecture delivers up to 2.5 TB/s of low-latency interprocessor bandwidth and 800 GB/s of fast memory bandwidth. The interconnect architecture features more than 10,000 signals between the two chips. A low-level view of the Apple M1 Ultra SOC reveals a 20-core CPU with 16 high-performance and 4 high-efficiency cores. Like the previous M1 chips, the high-performance cores are based on an ultra-wide execution architecture with 192KB instruction cache, 128 KB data cache & 48 MB of L2 cache while the efficiency cores are based on a Wide Execution architecture with 128KB instruction cache, 64KB data cache and 8 MB of L2 cache. There are also 32 cores as a part of the M1 Neural Engine which provide up to 22 trillion operations per second. M1 Ultra SOC Fails To Impressive in Benchmarks Against Intel & AMD Desktop CPUsNow in the leaked performance benchmarks, Apple's M1 Ultra SOC was shown beating up to an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X 64-core CPU with its minuscule 20-core processor. The M1 Ultra barely competes with the Intel Core i9-12900K and AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and there are no power numbers included either. It is highly likely that as with their performance numbers, the power numbers may have also been fabricated. Apple claimed that their new chip offered 90% better performance at the same power and higher performance than the 12900K while sipping in 100 Watts lower power, the benchmarks below don't show such performance claims: Apple M1 Ultra SOC Benchmarks (Credits: Dave2D): Apple M1 Ultra SOC Benchmarks (Credits: Matthew Moniz): Apple M1 Ultra SOC Benchmarks (Credits: NanoReview): This should tell you how much confidence you should put in Apple's own numbers for their SOCs. It looks like the official benchmarks were performed under select-workloads that favor the M1 Ultra CPU and not with real-world applications. |
Hands-On With the New M1 iPad Air - MacRumors Posted: 18 Mar 2022 12:27 PM PDT Apple last week introduced an updated iPad Air with an M1 chip, and now the new tablet is available for purchase. We picked one up to see how it compares to the iPad Pro, which also has an M1 chip, to give you an idea of which of Apple's iPads is right for you. Design wise, the fifth-generation iPad Air looks just like the fourth-generation iPad Air, with the exception of the colors. You can get the new model in purple and a new shade of blue, along with pink, starlight, and space gray.
Though Apple didn't change the look of the iPad Air, there are internal changes. Most notably, the iPad Air is using the same M1 chip as the iPad Pro, so in terms of performance, they're identical. You won't see any speed differences between the two lines until the iPad Pro gets an update with a faster chip, which is expected to happen later this year. Apple added a new 12-megapixel Ultra Wide front-facing camera to bring the iPad Air in line with the iPad Pro, and it supports Center Stage, the feature that keeps you in frame as you move about the room. The iPad Air has also been upgraded with 5G connectivity, but it is sub-6GHz 5G and it doesn't work with the fastest mmWave 5G networks. The iPad Pro does work with the faster 5G network, so that's worth keeping in mind. If you have the prior-generation iPad Air or the last two iPad Pro models, it's not going to be worth upgrading to this new fifth-generation iPad Air, but if you're coming from anything else, it's worth choosing the iPad Air over the iPad Pro because it has almost the same feature set and it's $200 cheaper. You're only going to be missing out on the faster 5G mmWave connectivity, the ProMotion display, and Face ID, and if these are important to you, you should hold out for the next-generation iPad Pro before upgrading. iPhone owners say iOS 15.4 is causing serious battery drain - BGR Posted: 17 Mar 2022 05:05 PM PDT This week, Apple rolled out iOS 15.4. If you have a supported device, you can download the new software update right now. The update is packed with great new features, including the ability to unlock an iPhone with Face ID while wearing a mask. But as with any new software, some users are running into issues after updating. Ever since iOS 15.4 launched on Monday, iPhone owners have been taking to Twitter to complain about battery drain. iOS 15.4 causing battery drain issuesEvery time Apple releases an iOS update, iPhone owners start complaining about battery life. It seems that iOS 15.4 is no exception, as Twitter is full of reports about serious battery drain. Here's a small sampling of the complaints as of Thursday: As Daily Mail notes, battery drain is not usually permanent. In fact, ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes explained why battery drain happens back in 2020:
Basically, give your iPhone a few days to recalibrate before you start panicking. Chances are that your battery life will be back to normal soon enough. Of course, depending on how old your phone is, it's possible that your battery has started to degrade. You can see how your battery is doing by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. My iPhone 11, for example, is down to 83% maximum capacity after two and a half years of daily use. As such, updates may impact my battery life more severely. Best new features in iOS 15.4Battery drain aside, there are a bunch of great reasons to install iOS 15.4 on your iPhone. As noted above, iOS 15.4 allows users to unlock their iPhone with Face ID while wearing a mask. This would have been even more useful a year ago when mask mandates were still active in many states, but it's a useful addition to the list of features nevertheless. iOS 15.4 also brings a new American voice to Siri, improved Live Text integration in Notes and Reminders, Tap to Pay on iPhone, the ability to add notes to Keychain passwords, and a new anti-stalking prompt for AirTags. Plus, a bunch of new emojis are now available. iOS 15 is compatible with all of the same iPhone models as iOS 14. As such, if you have any version of iOS 15 on your iPhone already, you can update to iOS 15.4 immediately. And even if you do have to deal with increased battery drain, you should always update ASAP.
