Apple Loop: Stunning New iPhone Leaks, Three Risky iPhones For 2018, Facebook Prepared Apple Strike

Apple's Triple Play On One iPhone

Apple is expected to increase the stakes in the smartphone camera battle later this year by outfitting its largest iPhone with a 'three lens' camera offering up to x5 optical zoom. While a new feature for iOS, it would be matching the impressive results of Huawei's P20 Pro. Forbes' Gordon Kelly reports:

This would be a huge step up from the 2x optical zoom in the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus and give Apple a major differentiator over its rivals. Furthermore, the early signs are - unlike the now-defunct megapixel war - triple lens cameras do have the potential to significantly improve smartphone photography.

Huawei's recently released P20 Pro smartphone is the first mass-market device to offer a triple lens setup and it currently sits a long way clear of all rivals in DxOMark's smartphone camera rankings. Its triple cameras offer significantly better low light performance than both Apple and Samsung's phones and provide a 3x optical zoom.

Apple's Triple Play With Three iPhones

More analysis is pointing to Apple's upcoming plans for three new handsets this year. The aforementioned triple-lens unit is likely going to be the phabelt-focused model that is going for glorious specifications, but the other two are going to be more important in gathering a high volume of sales, as I reported earlier this week:

One of them will be an update to the iPhone X. The presumptively named iPhone X2 will continue the physical size and form factor of the iPhone X as Apple continues to push the bezel-reduced full screen design with the contentious notch.

The second model will be the equivalent of an iPhone X Plus, carrying forward the design cues of the 2018 flagship but in a larger screen that pushes the notch design into the phablet space.

Finally, the third model would retain the LED screen technology of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but within a 6.1 inch screened device. That makes it awkward to carry the iPhone SE designation, so we could be looking at variously the iPhone X SE, the iPhone 9, or perhaps even just 'iPhone'.

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Pick Up Product (Red) Version

There's been a lot of work around the colour red this week, as Apple launches a Product(Red) version of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. David Phelan takes a closer look at the construction and how it is an improvement on the iPhone 7's approach:

A whole new iPhone design arrived last September with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which has meant th Product (Red) edition has required a new design approach, too, specifically because the latest iPhones have glass, not aluminium, backs.

As a result, the new iPhone has a strikingly different look. The aluminum edge band looks similar to the iPhone 7, but that's where the similarity ends. This time around, there's no antenna band visible at the phone's corners as that runs under the glass on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Anodized aluminum is matte, but glass, of course, is not, making for a bright, eye-catching finish.

Curiously, Apple has not pushed Product (Red) onto the iPhone X - perhaps that's coming later in the year? If so my money is on it launching in Q3 to boost the quarterly numbers after the Q2 boost from the Product (Red) Eights. Meanwhile, I find it amusing that Samsung launched a burgundy red version of the Galaxy 8:

Samsung has launched a burgundy red edition of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Already available in a number colours, the latest edition os targeted towards the Indian market, no doubt to create a more 'exclusive' version of the handset.

Taking a look back at another week of news from Cupertino, this week's Apple Loop includes three lenses for one iPhone, three iPhones for one launch, the new Product (Red) iPhones, Apple locking you into iOS 11.3, the new Foundation TV series for Apple TV, and Mark Zuckerberg's planned sideswipe at Apple in Congress.

Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the very many discussions that have happened around Apple over the last seven days (and you can read my weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes).

Android Auto is finally ready to go wireless, mostly

Posted: 14 Apr 2018 06:00 AM PDT

It's safe to say that the advent of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay has been a huge boon to consumers. Both systems offer unparalleled ease of use when compared with an auto manufacturer-designed system. While Apple has offered wireless connectivity for CarPlay in certain vehicles for months now, Android Auto required that in order to use it, your phone had to be physically connected to the vehicle via USB. Not anymore… mostly.

Soon you'll be able to kiss that cable goodbye, if you have a Google Phone and Android Auto 3.1.

Google

Google is finally ready to offer Android Auto over Wi-Fi despite working with JVC and Kenwood, each of which released head units at CES in January that were compatible with the feature. According to Google, for Android Auto wireless to work, you need to have either a Nexus or a Pixel phone running Android 8.0 (Oreo), a vehicle capable of running Android Auto v3.1 and a cable to set the system up.

If you don't have all of those things, Samsung fanboy, you're not totally screwed, just don't expect any solutions in the short term. Google is apparently working with phone manufacturers on making the software work with their individual wrappers, but who knows when that will actually roll out to the public.

We're looking forward to testing this new feature out as soon as possible, and we'll report back on how well it all works.

Shenmue 1 & 2 HD, Mega Drive Mini And More Revealed At SEGA FES

Posted: 14 Apr 2018 03:08 AM PDT

Shenmue HD

SEGA promised it would have "HUGE" news at SEGA FES 2018 earlier today and it delivered, offering not one, not two, but four rather impressive announcements.

Most of the announcements were somewhat predictable (in the previous article I accurately predicted two announcements and was somewhat close to another), but the real surprise is that we got anything at all. The guesses were made under the assumption that SEGA would actually announce something worthwhile, but as stated before, SEGA typically doesn't have many exciting announcements during its FES events.

This year was different, however, and there was something for everyone.

Shenmue I & II HD

First off, SEGA announced that at long last Shenmue I & II will be coming to modern consoles in 2018. Specifically, the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

These will be completely enhanced versions of the originals, featuring fully scalable screen resolution, choice of modern or classic control schemes, PC graphics options, an updated user interface and the option to choose between the original Japanese or English voiceovers.

Mega Drive Mini

Mega Drive Mini

Next, following in the footsteps of the Sega Genesis Mini, SEGA announced the coming of the Mega Drive Mini. The full range of games it will offer is unknown (it seems SEGA was asking fans what titles they wanted?), but we do know it will be arriving in Japan in 2018.

SEGA Ages

Sega Ages

Third, SEGA announced SEGA Ages for the Nintendo Switch and be available via the Nintendo eShop. It will be coming to Japan and the West this summer.

Overall, this looks reminiscent of the SEGA Genesis Classics that was inadvertently leaked in February, but with titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Thunder Force IV and Phantasy Star, along with its availability on the Switch, it looks like owners of the Nintendo console got the better deal — especially because the SEGA Ages compilations on the SEGA Saturn and PlayStation 2 were never entirely localized.

Sakura Taisen

Sakura Taisen

Lastly, SEGA revealed that a new entry in the Sakura Taisen (known as Sakura Wars in the West) series is in the works.

For those unfamiliar with the series, Sakura Taisen is a series of tactical RPGs that features a sim-based story system where the player's actions have a direct impact on the game's outcome. Since its debut in 1996 on the Sega Saturn, it has gone on to get four more entries in the main series, with the last arriving in 2005 for the PlayStation 2. So far, the only entry to have made it to the West was the fifth entry, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love in 2010 for the PS2 and Wii.

As for this entry, all we know is that it will be set in Taisho era 1929.

Well played, SEGA, well played.
